FILMMAKING OVERVIEW

As a documentary filmmaker, I draw inspiration from Agnès Varda (The Gleaners and I, Cleo from 5 to 7), Zana Briski (Born into Brothels) and Jeffrey Blitz (Spellbound). Like them, I aim to create films that speak to issues that currently confront our society, but also weave in a sense of history, an understanding of how we’ve arrived at the situations we’re facing today.

I am particularly concerned with portraying my documentary subjects within their own culture and to give a voice to their racial, national, gender and sexual identities. One of the greatest challenges I find in my work is editing down hours of footage into a concise narrative. My main concern in that process is choosing excerpts from each subject’s participation that faithfully represent the main ideas they expressed throughout the entirety of their footage.

I have two projects in preproduction right now. The first one deals with the duality of identity experienced by female immigrants in New York City, and the second with following a young female filmmaker as she makes her first film.
